About Before the Bark

It didn’t start with a method. It started with a question.

Why do some dogs react “out of nowhere”?
Why does training work one day and fall apart the next?
Why do calm-looking dogs still feel anything but calm?

Most answers focus on behavior—what the dog is doing, what needs to stop, what needs to change.

But behavior is the last thing to change.

Before the Bark was built on a different assumption:

Behavior reflects how the nervous system is processing stress.

Every reaction—whether it’s barking, shutting down, pulling, or ignoring cues—is part of a larger cycle:
taking in information, building activation, and trying to resolve it.

When that cycle can’t complete, behavior escalates, stalls, or becomes unpredictable.

So instead of asking,
“How do we stop this behavior?”
we ask,
“What is the system trying to do—and where is it getting stuck?”

This is where the work happens.

Before the Bark focuses on helping both dogs and humans:

  • recognize stress as it builds

  • move through it instead of getting stuck in it

  • return to a more stable, regulated state

Because when the system changes, behavior follows.

This approach looks different.

It’s not about control, quick fixes, or perfect obedience.

It’s about:

  • timing

  • clarity

  • observation

  • and understanding how pressure, environment, and expectation shape behavior in real time

It’s structured, but adaptable.
Grounded, but responsive.
And always centered on regulation—not performance.

If you’re here, something probably isn’t working.

Maybe your dog is reactive.
Maybe training feels inconsistent or confusing.
Maybe you’re doing everything “right” and still not getting the outcome you expected.

You don’t need a perfect plan.

You just need a clearer understanding of what’s actually happening.

That’s where we start.

About Me

I’m Alex, the trainer behind Before the Bark.

My work sits at the intersection of:

  • dog behavior and training

  • nervous system regulation

  • and real-world application under stress

Through teaching, training, and working with sensitive and reactive dogs, I’ve seen the same pattern repeat:

When we focus only on behavior, we stay stuck.
When we understand the system driving it, things start to shift.

Before the Bark is the result of that pattern—refined into a framework that can be applied across different dogs, environments, and people.

Start Where You Are

Whether you're dealing with reactivity, overwhelm, or something that just isn’t making sense—this is where we start.
